“This Lodge does not exist, it is a myth :)”
It’s a mirage, a place you dream about, a perfect stop in exploring the diverse nature and eco systems of Costa Rica. In my 11 years some 35 trips to this splendid country, this lodge is what puts Charm in the word Rustic, and its is this type of lodge and area that is why getting off the beaten path, and all the efforts to go the long way, or the old way, pays off, and rewards you with a gem like this.
My wife did not want to leave, me neither but had a schedule to keep. The owners are gracious and passionate about their special farm, and local ties they have nurtured, like so many of the great lodge owners in this region of the world, there is a bigger reason than just a change of lifestyle, its a dream come true, and you get the chance to be a part of it.
Kick back, chill out, relax, unwind, and enjoy, hike the nearby Celeste Waterfalls and Park trails, and ride horses on the large rolling green hills of the mountains, enjoy the Tico way of life, slightly altered by southern charm and hard work.
The cabins, rooms, food, lodge, is all what makes it a departure from the usual places, here, its all about no TV, no phone, fireplaces, hot soaking tubs, jungle canopy and home cooking.
“One of the highlights of our trip”
Between the swimming hole, the hot tub, the hikes and the horseback riding, we were very busy. This is a low-key place and a great place to soak up the natural surroundings either by doing nothing or by participating in all that is available. You can’t go wrong with this lodge—stay several days if you can.
“Amazing, Perfect, Wonderful!”
Everything is natural… the grounds, the food and the swimming. Everything was a perfect 10! There were tons of monkeys in the trees overhead and the birds were everywhere! We took a horseback ride through their beautiful property. Best food we had the entire time in Costa Rica. This place is a do not miss. Make time to stay. You will not regret it!
“Our Favorite Part of 12 Day Trip”
Salt Lake City, Utah
Our favorite part of the trip was our stay at La Carolina. What a magical place Bill & Karien have created. We loved that there was no Internet or cell coverage, which forced us to completely unplug and relax. The entire family agreed this was the favorite part of the trip and my 15 years old daughter asked if we could stay a month! If you want an authentic Costa Rican experience, you will not be disappointed.
“Most beautiful spot to stay”
Salt Lake City, UT
It was all very magical and peaceful. The meals were fantastic, satisfying and everything was delicious. We enjoyed watching the beautiful birds, including toucans, from our table. We can’t say enough good things about this place, and I will be so sad if I never got to return. Fabulous time.
“Comfortable Gem in the rainforest”
You can get away from it all and immerse yourself in the simple beauty found here. We enjoyed eating the authentic Costa Rican food in a candlelit outdoor setting. Watching the birds at breakfast was phenomenal. Don’t miss the hot tub by the river at night. It is awesome. Wish we had stayed longer.
“Amazing place, lovely people”
We stayed at the La Carolina Lodge for only one night with our two young children (5 and 7) and my only regret is that we did not stay longer! The place is rustic but very comfortable, and a delight for both young travelers and adults. The staff was kind and helpful, and the food delicious! We loved the candlelight-only evenings, and seeing exotic birds right outside the porch was a real treat. Highly recommend this lodge for those seeking a unique experience far away from the touristy path. We will definitely be back!!
“100 percent awesome!”
I do not even know where to start. From the owners, staff, grounds, wildlife, river, cabins, food and price… it was amazing! I am so glad that we spent 4 days there. We enjoyed everything about it. We took advantage of the horseback riding, guided tour through the rain forest, the lake and the paddleboat (just a 15-20 minute walk from the lodge). It is rustic and magical.
“Just what I wanted, the real Costa Rica”
Charleston, South Carolina
I enjoyed every minute. The friendly staff of locals made the trip! It was interesting to see how well you could live with very little of the things we take for necessities. I was fed well, slept well and felt better than I had in years. My only regret was I did not plan to stay longer.
“Set the Bar!”
Wow! Even though this place came highly recommended, it broke all of our expectations. Set next to a river, the grounds are lovely, with flowers and birds all around, and a fire-fed hot tub overlooking a small waterfall. The staff here is super, super friendly.
The simply prepared food was fantastic and plentiful. You will not go hungry. Fresh juices and hot beverages are available all day. One of our favorite spots in all of our travels!
“Wow, this is paradise”
We stayed for 5 days at La Carolina Lodge. It was great!! The food was fantastic and seemed never ending. Everything is grown or produced right on the property. The trail riding and walking is just amazing. Our days there were so peaceful. Swimming in the river then in the wood fired hot tub was great. The staff is very attentive to your needs and the owners are super people. This is the place to go and relax, nothing finer!
“Tranquility in the Mountains”
From the moment you step out of your car you hear the river you feel yourself freed. Swimming in the river and looking at the fish with the mask provided by the owners was fun. The wood-fired hot tub soothing, especially in the candlelight. The staff is wonderful and the owners regard them as family. The horses were extremely well trained They have a beautiful hike on the property that wanders through pastures and jungle alive with exotic birds and some guests spotted monkeys.
The food was excellent!!! My only regret is that we were only there for one night and as we drove away I kept asking myself “Why are we leaving.” For me it was my most enjoyable experience in Costa Rica.
“Complete mental reboot!”
Playas del Coco, Costa Rica
Time stands still whenever I visit the Carolina Lodge with my little family, giving us plenty of occasions to spend some real quality time together on a horse-ride, playing games, swimming in the river, relaxing in the hot tub and observing colourful birds like the green honeycreeper, masked tytira, Montezuma Oropendolas, colared aracaris, both chestnut-mandibled and keel-billed toucans as well as the tiny blue-jeans poison dart frog…(just to mention what we saw on our last one-night stay).
“Amazing retreat in the Costa Rican jungle”
We’ve stayed at nearly 20 hostels, hotels or lodges in CA – and almost immediately upon arrival, La Carolina shot to the top of the list.
La Carolina’s incredible staff, delicious food, and lovely grounds really made our stay special. We ate fresh eggs and fruit from the farm, rode horses around the property, and sat for what must have been hours watching toucans and bright songbirds at the bird feeder by the lodge. My only regret is that we could only stay two nights.
“Hands down…the BEST!!!”
Bill and Karin were the best. The staff was outstanding. The hot tub built right next to the river was crazy good. The wood burning floating “stove” warmed the water as the river rushed right on the other side of the mortar/rock wall. The staff is truly what made the experience. Warm, real and honest. Just outstanding…. I never felt safer…. You don’t need a lock on the cabin doors…it is a true rural lodging experience with real people. It is hard to find places like this in the world Thank you Bill, Karin and all the wonderful staff…. YOU ROCK!
“A Little Piece of Heaven”
San Antonio, Texas
My wife and I recently stayed at La Carolina Lodge on a whim, and it was the best decision we made on our trip! From the outset, we were made to feel like family. The lack of TV’s, Phones, and Electricity at night only added to the ambiance of transporting you to another world that you will never want to leave. And I haven’t even mentioned the food, which was amazing!! The best we had on our trip, and it’s included! It’s a great price, and a lifelong memory. What else can I say?
La Carolina is its own destination.
The cabins are spread out, and the entire lodge doesn’t accommodate too many people, so one always feels the sense of being simply a guest at a friend’s ranch–but this feeling comes mostly through the hospitality and warmness of the staff and owners.
“A little paradise in Tenorio National Park, Costa Rica”
Bensheim, Hessen, Germany
A perfect location for enjoying a couple of days in real nature… with hiking, horse riding and great local food. The service couldn’t be better and making the stay at the lodge a perfect one. We definitely will be coming back! Thanks Bill and Karien!
“My favorite place in Costa Rica”
I’ve been to Costa Rica a few times and La Carolina Lodge will always have a special place in my heart. It is truly magical! We had 3 wonderful meals, an incredible horseback ride through the jungle/forest, and an amazing hike to the Rio Celeste Waterfall. I hope one day to visit La Carolina Lodge again!
“A Hidden Gem”
A truly magical place. Three awesome traditional meals a day. The staff is so friendly. They treat you like family and that is exactly how the owners treat them. This place, its people, and its surroundings really represent the true Costa Rica experience. The highlight of our trip.
“Not your typical tourist spot (and that’s a good thing)!”
New York City, New York
My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights and we loved it. All the meals are included and were excellent. Most of the meat, vegetables and fruit come from their own farm so it is FRESH. In fact, the eggs in the morning were some of the best eggs I have ever eaten.
“Experience of a Lifetime in Unspoiled Costa Rica”
Owings Mills, Maryland
My stay at La Carolina Lodge was the experience of a lifetime. The property was absolutely gorgeous! There was so much wildlife on the property that you can catch a photo opportunity of almost every Costa Rican animal you wish. Overall, La Carolina Lodge is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.
“Authentic Costa Rican Experience”
This is a working ranch with lots of available activities to participate in, if you want. But the bird watching alone is worth the trip.. The outdoor areas are lit at night by candles, and the scene is perfectly lovely. We are already talking about a return trip. Be prepared for the utmost in hospitality. The horses are excellent specimens and well trained also.
“Prepare for ultimate relaxation”
Hands down the best thing about this place is the people working here.
Most of our time was spent going from swimming in the river, relaxing in the hot tub and reading in the hammocks. There was the occasional stroll among the grounds. This is a place of peace, restoration and relaxation!
“Amazing! La Carolina Lodge is awesome!”
It isn’t often that you visit a lodge/hotel with such happy staff. Everyone was smiling and always helpful.
The setting of the lodge is beautiful. There is a superb river that runs by the lodge, great for swimming. And if too cold for you, jump into the naturally warmed up hot tub.
The lodge can be very romantic due to all the candles and nature, great for couples. Food was awesome, very healthy and exactly what we were looking for.
We will certainly head back to Carolina Lodge the next time we visit CR. If you are looking for a proper Costa Rican experience, then La Carolina Lodge is definitely a must!
“Step back in time… and relax”
Santa Ana, Costa Rica
Your coffee roasted on an open fire, your food prepared on a wood stove…. Horses that want you to ride them and see the countryside. No cell phones, no TV no lights… a stream nearby with a naturally built hot tub with a floating firebox… incredible service and guide service to Rio Celeste Park. Who could want more?
“A perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle”
The staff was extremely helpful and they made sure our stay was perfect. Our Cabin had rocking chairs on the front porch, which were perfect for a relaxing read. This was our favorite place we stayed on our Costa Rica Trip. It was serene, peaceful, and authentic Costa Rican experience 🙂
“A magical place…”
A highlight of our trip was 2 magical days at La Carolina Lodge. The place has a rustic feel, food prepared on a wood fired stove and candles light up the darkness… we used no electricity except to recharge our camera batteries, simple furniture made from local trees, much of the food grown or raised on the farm.
“As good as it gets”
Heredia, Costa Rica
Reviewed March 27, 2012 via mobile
Bill and his lovely wife have an amazing farm and scenic lodge along a river in Guanacaste. The setting is peaceful and beautiful, weather is warm but not hot and the nights are perfect for outdoor lounging, watching fireflies, and listening to the running streams.
“Great and very hospitable working farm”
We loved everything at La Carolina Lodge. We believe that this is Costa Rica as it used to be all over the country. There are lots and lots of birds around. We probably saw more birds here than anywhere else in Costa Rica (and we were in Corcovado NP)… should not put you off from going there. If you are looking for an authentic Costa Rican experience – which is hard to find in some places – this lodge is highly recommended!
“Nature, tranquility and you”
Bayville, New Jersey
The grounds are beautifully landscaped and we saw many varieties of birds, including toucans and woodpeckers at the bird feeders during breakfast.
We really enjoyed the horseback ride through the property and the hike at Tenorio National Park.
Our trip to La Carolina Lodge was a highlight of our time in Costa Rica. If you enjoy exploring new places in their ‘natural’ state then this may be the place for you. There are no tourist traps here…just you, nature, and tranquility.
“A Must-Visit Destination”
Playa Grande, Costa Rica
To awake with the sound of the birds, in a big comfy bed… we felt so rested and will definitely return.
Thank you to all the staff at La Carolina Lodge, and to the owner who was so professional yet welcoming and truly cared as to whether we were comfortable.
“Amazing off the tourist path!”
This place is amazing! We went horseback ridding, milked the cow, and ate great food. Everyone is friendly, rooms were great, saw tons of birds, great coffee grown onsite, close hiking trails, wonderful hosts, this place has a great vibe, authentic.
“Incredible Every Time”
This is a MUST SEE for anyone coming to Costa Rica. I have stayed at Carolina Lodge many times over the past few years, and I never get tired of going. I can’t recommend La Carolina Lodge enough!!!
“Perfect Stay – Everyone was Great”
Newport Beach, CA
We recently spent a couple of nights at the La Carolina Lodge in our journey through Northern Costa Rica and it was the highlight of the trip.
“La Carolina, an amazingly beautiful experience”
In over two weeks of traveling to great places in Costa Rica, La Carolina lodge stands out as the most amazing experience. I together with 18 people from 5 different countries, were there the first week of February and virtually everyone was raving about the beauty and ambiance.
“Rustic Paradise in Paradise”
Great Barrington, Massachusetts
Life will never be the same after experiencing La Carolina Lodge…the memories will sustain me long after I have returned to the cold Northeast.
“Jewel of Costa Rica”
La Carolina was the perfect mix of rustic and service. In two weeks of travel in Costa Rica, this experience was the most authentic, adventurous, and friendly we had. The staff could not have been warmer, we felt right at home.
